Dr. Hassan El-Nomany\u2019s journey at Sohag University has been more than a progression from one position to another. It has encompassed interconnected paths in medicine, scientific research, and university administration, culminating in his appointment as university president in 2023, bringing with him years of experience addressing the needs of university hospitals and the demands of educational development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the operating room, where orthopedic and nerve surgeries require scientific precision and specialized skills, emerged one dimension of his professional career. His responsibilities later expanded to include hospital management, faculty development, support for scientific research, and efforts to broaden access to medical services for residents of Sohag Governorate and the wider southern Upper Egypt region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This background offers multiple perspectives on El-Nomany\u2019s experience. He is an orthopedic surgeon, a researcher who has published dozens of scientific studies, and an academic who progressed through several leadership positions within the university before becoming its president, at a time when universities are increasingly expected to integrate advanced education, healthcare services, and scientific research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El-Nomany began his academic journey by earning a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the Faculty of Medicine at Assiut University in 1992. He subsequently pursued postgraduate studies in orthopedic surgery at Sohag University, earning both a master\u2019s degree and a doctorate in the specialty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His career extended beyond medical practice and conventional academic work to encompass scientific research and participation in specialized international forums. He received awards for outstanding scientific research at two international conferences held in New Delhi in 2013 and South Korea in 2016. In 2019, he also represented the university at the Union of Arab Hand Surgery Associations in Morocco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His publications and research reflect another dimension of his scientific interests. He has published more than 37 research papers and authored two books in his field, Peripheral Nerve Injuries and Bone Reconstruction. He has also participated in the membership and peer-review activities of several medical associations, committees, and scientific journals at both the national and international levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he moved into university administration, his medical specialization remained an integral part of his career. He held responsibilities at the university hospital, including serving as deputy hospital director in 2006 and working in emergency management. He subsequently advanced to leadership positions that included the deanships of the Faculties of Medicine and Nursing, followed by his appointment as vice president of the university in 2021. In 2023, he became president of Sohag University by presidential decree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

University Hospitals: Turning Medical Expertise into a Development Strategy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The medical sector has been one of the major areas of development at the university during El-Nomany\u2019s presidency, amid the expansion of facilities, specialties, and services available to patients. The significance of this development extends beyond the construction of new buildings to the range and quality of services university hospitals can provide, particularly in specialized fields that may otherwise require patients to travel outside their governorates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, the new Specialized Surgery Hospital began operating an intensive care unit with a capacity of 35 beds, alongside a dedicated clinic serving people with disabilities. Meanwhile, Sohag\u2019s Shifa Specialized Children\u2019s Hospital introduced specialized units for premature infants, cardiac imaging, and dialysis, strengthening healthcare services for children across southern Upper Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Construction and equipment works for the new Oral and Dental Medicine Hospital at the university\u2019s new campus have also been completed as part of the expansion of treatment services. In addition, projects for a hospital specializing in cardiac, thoracic, brain, and neurosurgery are intended to broaden the range of available medical specialties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside infrastructure development, the university has pursued the introduction of advanced medical techniques for complex cases. These include the use of three-dimensional printing technology in jaw tumor resection procedures at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit, as well as the successful treatment of achalasia using the POEM technique. This endoscopic procedure allows treatment without conventional open surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the field of nerve surgery, El-Nomany personally performed microsurgery on a 25-year-old man suffering from complete paralysis of the upper limb following a severe brachial plexus injury. The case highlights the challenges associated with highly specialized surgical procedures and the importance of having the expertise and resources required to manage them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expanding medical services also means making them more accessible. The university has organized dozens of free medical and development convoys in the most underserved villages of Sohag Governorate, as part of efforts associated with the presidential initiatives \u201cBedaya\u201d and \u201cHaya Karima.\u201d These convoys provide medical care, surgical procedures, and literacy-related services. The university has also sought to strengthen cooperation with the Armed Forces Medical Services Department in healthcare delivery and joint medical training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A University Focused on More Than Hospital Development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At the educational level, the university\u2019s development agenda extends beyond medical faculties to the modernization of academic and technological infrastructure, alongside the expansion of educational facilities and programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Projects have included the construction and development of buildings for the Faculties of Pharmacy, Oral and Dental Medicine, and Computers and Artificial Intelligence at the new Al-Kawamil campus. The university has also moved to activate academic programs at the Faculty of Applied and Heritage Arts, which aims to support the study and development of traditional crafts and folk arts in Upper Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of its digital transformation, the university has equipped a central electronic examination building with modern technology. In scientific research, the data provided indicate that the number of Sohag University scientists included in Stanford\u2019s list of the world\u2019s top 2% most influential scientists has increased to 34, compared with 18 previously. The Faculty of Science leads the university\u2019s list, with 21 scientists. The university has also advanced in the Webometrics Ranking, reaching 1,401st place worldwide after a reported rise of 859 positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These indicators are relevant to the university\u2019s research standing and its capacity to produce knowledge. However, they represent only part of a broader picture that also requires consideration of educational quality, opportunities for students, and the extent to which institutional development benefits the surrounding community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sohag National University and Sports Facilities: Expanding the University\u2019s Role<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Expansion has also extended to the establishment of Sohag National University, providing an additional pathway for higher education in the governorate. At the new campus, the university has also developed sports facilities, including a multipurpose five-a-side football pitch, an educational semi-Olympic swimming pool, and a major indoor sports complex project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development plans also include facilities designed to enable people with disabilities to participate in sports, including courts for boccia. These initiatives reflect a broader understanding of university services that encompasses sports and recreational activities alongside education, research, and healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between the operating room and the university president\u2019s office, El-Nomany\u2019s administrative experience reflects a combination of medical and academic expertise. At the same time, the university faces ongoing challenges related to sustaining hospital development, improving educational quality, strengthening scientific research, and ensuring that services reach the widest possible segment of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, the most important challenge for any university development strategy is to translate buildings, equipment, and ranking indicators into tangible and sustainable improvements in the lives of patients, students, and researchers. Achieving this goal would strengthen Sohag University\u2019s role as a key contributor to healthcare and educational development in Sohag Governorate and southern Upper Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
